Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi/low starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming assortment of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players shooting for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
