Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing collection of betting options and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, and a few shooting for the low.
