Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming assortment of wagering options and because you have many players shooting for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
