Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender in the world by many of the top professionals. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to discover whatever he could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the detrimental comments from other people destroy his ambition of becoming one of the best poker competitors in the world.
He began playing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win was not a common thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated many of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable love for poker. He states that he is learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. He knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and always strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he favors winning money games on a normal basis.
