Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in almost all poker games.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complicated at the start, following a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming assortment of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, as well as a few trying for the low.
