Omaha Hi/Lo: General Overview
September 4th, 2025 by Elliott

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi low provides an amazing array of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous players trying for the high, as well as several trying for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha High-Low.
