NL Texas Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
March 20th, 2026 by Elliott

Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker player on the globe by many of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His papa taught him one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn anything he could about the game. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the adverse feedback from others destroy his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.

Phil began competing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated many of the well known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing passion for poker. Phil says that he is learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his success. He knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Even though Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
